A Garden's Family
a half hour documentary

Commissioned by Canadian national broadcaster Vision TV, this documentary explores how the garden is a place which, through the eyes of the different members of the family for whom it provides, takes on various roles and functions within the lives of that family. The Perlmutters learn to better understand each other's sometimes opposing perspectives, and realize that the garden is a microcosm for both the diversity of familial relationships as well as for its sense of unity.

Mary Perlmutter is an enthusiastic organic gardener. On the subject of organic gardening, she has written a book and many magazine articles, has spoken to numerous horticultural societies, and has appeared on television and radio. She is passionately opposed to the use of chemicals in gardening because she believes that these are poisonous substances which endanger the health of her family and all life.

Leah Perlmutter is Mary's daughter. As a student of eco-feminism and earth-based spirituality, Leah finds great spiritual nourishment in her mother's garden. However, Leah sees the garden as a temple to the Creator. Growing up, she also sometimes felt her mother was more interested in the garden than in her.

Syd Perlmutter, who derives his sense of spirituality from golf, and whose humorous takes on his wife and daughter's idiosyncrasies add a light touch to the film.

Devon Perlmutter, representing the third generation in this family, embraces both his grandmother's and his aunt's philosophies. He is passionate about taking care of nature and is highly articulate about its spiritual importance considering his young age.
