In Lauriello, an old town of central Italy near Rome, young Felice Di Gelsio’s dreams of beauty are broken by a presentiment of destruction and death. He is haunted by his transforming body: its look, its pimples, its clumsiness, its sluggishness; by the explosive temper of his homeroom teacher who takes out on him her bitterness and frustration; by a mean old neighbourhood busybody who is suspicious of his every move; by the discordant news of the world, received via the television, giving him a distorted, fragmented view of the value of life; and by a sense that illness could take the life of his mother. To Felice, these troubles render everything suddenly meaningless, inconclusive, useless. He desperately requires an antidote to his depression, and searches for it in the beauty of art, literature, music and nature, as well as in the kindness of his best friend Andrea and of his generous substitute teacher Liliana. However, these gentle efforts are not effective, and the self-doubt in his heart overwhelms his desire to live. Only an unexpected and compelling opportunity to raise his head from his dark introspection, to see beyond himself and take action, will provide him with the promise of redemption.
